For Sova, Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM) is more than a moment of recognition — it reinforces the purpose behind what we do every day. Creating inclusive restroom solutions that support individuals of all abilities means helping communities build spaces where everyone can participate fully.

What is Developmental Disabilities Month?

Established in 1987 by Ronald Reagan, Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM) was created to promote inclusion, highlight the barriers individuals with developmental disabilities continue to face, and celebrate their achievements and contributions. Observed each March, it encourages greater public understanding and calls on communities to build environments where everyone has the opportunity to participate fully and equally.

Orange has become the recognized color of the month, chosen to reflect optimism, strength, and the limitless potential within every individual. Wearing or displaying orange throughout March is a simple but visible way to spark conversations, encourage acceptance, and stand in support of truly inclusive communities.

Why Developmental Disabilities Month Matters

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month matters because inclusion is still not guaranteed. While progress has been made, barriers — both visible and invisible — continue to limit full participation in everyday life. For individuals with developmental disabilities and their families, accessibility influences decisions that many others take for granted: where to travel, which schools to attend, what venues feel welcoming, and whether public spaces can be used safely and comfortably.

Awareness creates accountability. It encourages communities, businesses, and designers to look beyond minimum requirements and consider whether their environments truly support independence, dignity, and equal access. When accessibility is treated as foundational rather than optional, spaces become more welcoming for everyone — not just those with disabilities.
